Call It Sleep
By Henry Roth

This book is tells about the youth of Henry Roth. It tells about the poor treatment he endured during his early childhood, which was spent in a Jewish slum. Roth used strong language in a very frank style in order to convey how terrible treatment which he had endured during his time there had been. The book gives a terribly direct glance into the life of his family, and how they had managed to get along in such a terrible situation.

Henry Roth was born in the Ukraine on Feb. 8, 1906 and then immigrated to New York City with his family when he was only 18 months old.

Call It Sleep (continued) By Henry Roth As a youth, Henry talks about beginning his life in America in a New York City slum. As David grows and matures he is impacted with many traumatic experiences. His father, Albert, is unable to maintain employment which triggers his verbal abuse to his family.
This book shows his perspective of the American dream. This family is unpleasantly hit by reality because it is set during the Great Depression. Albert states in the book, "Getting up and going outside onto the earth did not change a man; getting up and going outside onto pavement did."

Based off of the poems by Charles Reznikoff, the immigrating Jews moved into neighborhoods that had few Jews that lived there already. The Jews that did live there were wealthy. The immigrants did not have money, and they got in trouble if they were not perfect.

Hebrew literature
contains stories, poems, religious studies, and other works written in Hebrew, one of the oldest living languages in the world. The Hebrew Bible, which Christians call the Old Testament, is the greatest product of Hebrew literature. Through the centuries, many Hebrew works were written by Jews living in Europe. Today, Israeli writers produce most Hebrew literature.

The First known works of literature were Biblical poems written in Hebrew. The poems include "The Song of Miriam", which may date back to the early 1200's B.C., and "The Song of Deborah", written in the 1100's B.C.
The other major product of Hebrew literature was the Mishnah, a written version of the traditional Jewish oral law. The Mishnah, which was written in about 200 A.D., forms part of the Talmud. The Talmud, next to the Bible, is the most sacred book in the Jewish religion. Great verse prayers called piyyutim were being composed by the 500's for religious services.
